A hive of activity once again, as diggers rather than shoppers pound the pavement, the reinvention of Oxford Street is underway.
Westminster City Council has begun work on temporary interventions that will create more space for people, add new trees and greenery, and introduce new seating, cycle parking and pocket parks throughout the Oxford Street District.
The temporary measures will create a welcoming and safe environment for residents, workers and visitors when lockdown restrictions are eased, helping retailers, restaurants, and other businesses in the area to bounce back. The first in a series of Council-led projects repositioning Oxford Street as the centre of a world-leading retail and leisure district, the interventions will be followed by permanent projects over the next five years in which the nation’s favourite high street will be reimagined.
Delivering stakeholder engagement as part of the Murphy Careys Joint Venture, alongside colleagues from CJ Associates, we’ve been working closely with the Council in preparing for this moment and for what will come next.
Through an integrated engagement strategy – including meetings with partners, targeted digital communications that reach over a thousand stakeholders, social media, and media relations – we are supporting the delivery of an ambitious public sector-led, private sector-supported reimagining of the world’s most famous high street.
